A few years ago I received the 'Daily Photographer of The Year' award at the Regional Press Awards in London. It's the industry Oscars for the best in UK regional and local papers. I was also runner up in the Johnston Press daily photographer of the year awards. I was shortlisted in the 2021 British Photography awards for a HMS Prince of Wales photo and shortlisted in the same awards in 2022 for my event photography, again shortlisted in 2023 in the documentary category. I was also shortlisted in the 2023 Siena Awards, Drone Photo Awards competition. More recently shortlisted in the 2024 events photography awards cultural events category.
I have been taking photos since my early teens and joined my local paper the Peterborough Evening Telegraph when I was 22, starting off as a library assistant, scanning photos and printing customer orders, just over a year later I took up the position of Junior Photographer and stayed at the paper for a further three years building on my experience and photography skills.
I was then successful moving to the Portsmouth News as a Senior Photographer in 2001, a very busy four edition paper selling in excess of 70,000 copies a day. One year later I was appointed as Assistant Picture Editor, half of my time was spent being a photographer and the other half I ran the picture desk in the absence of the Picture Editor which included Friday nights and weekends, with a department of 10 to manage, it was a busy and demanding job. I did that role for over 11 years, finally making it to the top of the department as Picture Editor for my last two years with the company, managing the department and being a photographer was exciting and required multi-tasking, finishing on a high totting up nearly 18 years working for Johnston Press. With over nine years of being freelance, makes me nearing three decades as a full-time professional photographer.
With my experience as a top class photographer, knowing what makes a great picture and with my picture editing skills can advise on what photo is best for publication. Although I have spent 13 years briefing photographers, I am able to be briefed myself, but will work above and beyond the brief to produce eye catching photographs and video. Not to mention being published regularly in the national press. A few years ago I expanded my business to work as a news agency, getting other photographers published in the national press.
