A brave kayaker took a leap of faith by paddling down Glencoe Falls, a 50ft waterfall in Scotland on Friday 28/8/20.
Ewan Campbell 18 of Lochgilphead in Argyll and Bute, went down Glencoe Falls waterfall on the A82 between Glencoe and Altnafeadh. Also known as ‘Meeting of Three Waters’ which is normally a popular tourist spot for photos, but the teen went for an extreme thrill ride. The advernturer dropped 50ft (15.5m) down the waterfall, equal to the height of over three double-decker busses in just a few seconds.
Ewan is a hotel worker, currently on furlough and has been making the most of his time off spending most days on the water in his kayak said:
‘I’ve been paddling since I was seven or eight years old, started off in flat water then moved onto canoe slalom and I was in the Scottish team for that and won some titles. I just do the fun stuff now, so don’t do any competing.’
‘I just like the adventure, going to different places and enjoy walking to lots of the rivers. I’ll sometimes walk for six to eight miles up a glen which can take over two hours with the kayak, walking upto the rivers right up in the hills, loaded up it weighs about 25kg, so quite heavy. Then when I get to the river I’ll paddle back down to the car which can take a few hours as I’ll get out of the kayak to look at all the different rapids before tackling them.’
‘A lot of the rivers up in the glens have waterfalls with big drops. There is risk to it, but doing it over the years you develop the skills to do them. I’ve never had any injuries. My relatives are amazed at the videos when I show them, saying I shouldn’t be doing that, or its a bit scary.’
‘When going down the falls you feel weightless, it feels quite good. Bit like a waterpark going down the big flumes. I’m planning to go down the Falls of Clyde and the Falls of Bruar which are both higher than Glencoe Falls. The Falls of Bruar have never been paddled, and its about 60 meters with a few small drops and a big one, which will be fun.’
